Anyone being assessed for a kidney transplant will soon realise that it is a real ‘team effort’. The patients themselves are a key part of the preparation, others that will be involved are:
- renal recipient coordinators
- renal education nurses
- transplant surgeon
- consultant nephrologist
- transplant ward sister and nurses
- laboratory staff
After transplantation there will be other people, such as the pharmacists and the out-patient staff who will become familiar as frequent visits to the clinic are essential early after transplantation. Not every consultant nephrologist in NI looks after patients after transplantation, so a different consultant may be responsible for a patient’s on-going care after they have a new kidney.
